This elegant bathroom design is inspired by the brownstone buildings of the Upper East Side, rather than the skyscrapers of downtown. Classical, European and not afraid to mix forms with elements that are as eclectic as New York itself. From a city that never sleeps here’s a bathroom design that will help you relax.

Roll Top Baths, Which One?

Posted in Bathroom Furniture, Bathrooms, Bathrooms, Free Standing Baths, Google Bathrooms, Hudson Reed, Royce Morgan Free Standing Roll Top Baths, bathroom with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 24, 2008 by bathroomsuites

Freestanding Roll Top Baths have graced the finest properties in the world for more than a century and are as iconic today as they were in the Victorian era.

Over the past few years the Bathroom Industry has seen massive technological advances, from high definition televisions to infra red saunas and state of the art steam cabinets. The authentic styling of the iconic Roll Top Freestanding Bath has withstood the test of time and aesthetically remains unchanged from the baths of the Victorian era. However there have been significant improvements within the manufacturing process with the robustness, durability and heat retention properties of the reproduction Roll Top Baths having been enhanced.

The twin skinned acrylic Roll Top Baths are predominately imported from the far east, they will typically be made from 3.8mm twin skinned acrylic with a resin infill at the base of the bath. The appearance of this type of bath will be similar to that of the twin skinned European baths. The advanced manufacturing methods and quality of workmanship in the far east as become superior to that of the europeans. Don’t make the mistake of associating quality with price! The lower cost chinese baths are often superior to the european baths and represent excellent value for money. Don’t be fooled by suppliers claiming that their baths are british made when the are actually made in china and assembled in the UK.

This freestanding corner bath available exclusively from Abstract Bathrooms, show’s how advanced the chinese manufacturing processe’s have become. This bath has been formed from one single sheet of 6mm acrylic.

This Traditional Bathroom Suite features stonecast resin roll top baths. This type of bath is made in the same way as the cast iron original roll top baths were made. These baths weigh approximately twice the weight of the acrylic roll top baths and they are very robust.

The most popular styles of traditional roll top baths are the slipper baths, the double ended baths the bateau baths and the boat baths. All of the aforementioned baths originate from France and are as desirable now as they were when they were first developed.

The Slipper Bath

The slipper bath (also known as the sabbot bath) is charecterised by having a raised back, available in sizes from 1550mm to 1750mm in both twin skinned acrylic and stone cast resin. A minimilist, no tap hole version of this bath is now available from Abstract Bathrooms.

The slipper bath featured below is the twin skinned acrylic balmoral roll top bath.

The Double Ended Bath

The Double Ended Roll Top Bath, as do so many other classical freestanding baths, originates from France. Also known as a lovers bath the larger examples of this bath can accomodate two people. When choosing a Double Ended Roll Top Bath the important charecteristics of the baths are the ornateness of the legs, the detailed ball and claw leg would command a higher price should the bath ever be resold. The width and curvature of the roll and the proportions of the bath. Some of the best examples of the orginal baths can be found at the Water Monopoly Of London and Drummonds Architectural Salvage.

The double ended roll top bath featured below is the twin skinned acrylic balmoral roll top bath.

Free Standing Baths

Free Standing Baths and Roll Top Baths.  What’s the Difference?

Luxury free standing roll top baths have adorned the finest properties in the world since the 18th Century. The  Paris Bath Collection by Abstract Bathrooms combines authentic period styling with the latest production techniques, to satisfy the modern lifestyle.

The inspirational Ultimate Bath Collection from Abstract Bathrooms has become the benchmark for the bathroom industry. These superb ultra minimalist, design lead, contemporary free standing baths are made from 8mm reinforced acrylic and are finished to exacting standards.

When choosing a reproduction roll top bath there are some general rules that apply to each individual bath. The majority of people that buy a reproduction traditional free standing roll top bath are trying to restore their period properties back to there former glory. The baths usually fall in to one of two categories, either British or French. The styling of the reproduction baths are derived from the original baths, a typical British bath would be single ended ( taps at one end ), the roll of the bath on the more grandiose baths would be anywhere between 4″ and 7″ and would be a major factor when purchasing one of the original baths. The feet of the baths were not as ornate as the French baths, although a nice ball and claw foot or lions paw foot was commonplace. There are some fantastic examples of these original roll top baths at companies like the Water Monopoly of London and Drummonds of London. The original baths were made from cast iron, and vitreous enamelled at more than 800 degrees centigrade. This service is still available through unique enamelling services of Ribchester in Lancashire. The French baths were and still are the Crème de la crème of free standing baths. The original French roll top baths are smaller than the British baths as the French were a smaller race than the British. The bath legs on the French baths are design classics, with wonderfully ornate detail. The best examples of these rare baths are usually found in the French Châteaus or in our own British stately homes. Wentworth Woodhouse a privately owned stately home in South Yorkshire, England , houses a fabulous collection of original baths that have been sympathetically restored by Traditional Bathrooms Limited.

The same principles apply when choosing your reproduction free standing bath. Is the bath right for the property? The proportions of the bath, how it stands, the symmetry of the bath, the ornateness of the legs. The roll widths on the reproduction baths aren’t as wide as the originals as the acrylic tries to go back into it’s original form and can cause delamination.

Traditional Roll Top Free Standing Baths – Types And Styles

Single Ended Roll Top Baths

British baths with  tap holes at one end of the bath. The original baths were between 5 foot and 8 foot in length either parallel or tapered ( like a coffin in shape) the larger single ended roll top baths were used as shower baths also known as Canopy Baths and Plunger Baths . These baths are probably the most comfortable of all roll top baths.

A good example of the reproduction bath would be the Oxford Single Ended Bath made by Qulaceram this example is made from twin skinned acrylic and is sandwich filled with resin throughout the cavity.

Roll Top Slipper Bath

French style baths originally this type of bath didn’t have legs and sat straight on the floor. The bathing position of this bath is more upright than that of a single ended bath. Good examples of this bath are the Tiffany Slipper Bath from Qualceram a superb bath made from stone cast resin with an inner skin of 5mm acrylic.  A  less expensive option would be the Balmoral Slipper Bath from the Paris Collection by Abstract Bathrooms. This bath is made from twin skinned 5mm acrylic and is reinforced at the base. Don’t confuse this bath with similar looking baths as this bath has a superior specification.

Roll Top Double Ended BathsFrench in it’s origin although there are British an American versions. The original French Baths are easily distinguishable as they didn’t have any tap holes. The Paris Bath from Traditional Bathrooms Limited is a superb bath made from stone cast resin with an inner skin of 5mm acrylic and the most fantastic bath legs you are ever likely to see.  The less expensive option would be the Balmoral Double Ended Bath from the Paris Collection byAbstract Bathrooms. This bath is made from twin skinned 5mm acrylic and is reinforced at the base. Don’t confuse this bath with similar looking baths as this bath has a superior specification. Unusually this bath is available in a 1500mm size.

Roll Top Bateau And Boat Baths

The epitome of French design flair and possibly the most stylish baths ever made. The first examples of these stunning baths were developed by Jacob Delafon of Paris the original baths sell for thousands of pounds and are as popular now as they were when they were first developed circa 1850 to 1900. The reproduction baths are available with or without legs, the best examples of the bateau baths on legs are the Paris Bateau bath from Abstract Bathrooms be sure to choose a bath without tap holes for that authentic look. The Boat baths sit on an integral plinth and go right to the floor. Although a little expensive the boat bath from the Clearwater-Collection is a faithful reproduction of the original boat bath with the Abstract Bathrooms boat bath been a better value bath.  These baths are at home in both contemporary and traditional settings as there style transcends decades of interior design genres.

Bathroom Suite replacement can be one of the best and most cost effective ways to add value to your property. Even the most grandiose bathrooms can still be affordable. The UK bathroom market has seen massive changes over the last few years. The decline of the UK manufacturing base has resulted in a shift towards manufacturing in the far east, with China now accounting for approximately 90% of the worlds bathroom production. When it comes to choosing your bathroom suite, we would advocate not to take into account the origin of the products. The important things are the styling and the quality of the products. As with most goods you will still have to pay more for luxury branding even though they are probably made by the same people in the same factories from the same materials. The cheap imports and competetive market forces have seen the price of UK bathroom suites reach an all time low. Traditional Bathrooms Limited and their subsiduary company Abstract Bathrooms source direct and sell direct to the end user.

Bathroom Budgets
Both new builds and bathroom suite replacement require careful planning. It is important to set a realistic budget and contingency plan. There are thousands of bathroom suppliers, products, styles to choose from all with differnet features and benefits. We advocate involving the plumber from the start of the project as they will be able to advise on the likely cost of the installation, be mindful that the plumber may want to do what’s best from a plumbing point of view and regardless of the aesthetics of the bathroom. One of the generally accepted principles of bathroom design is that you don’t relocate the toilet as to move the soil stack can be very labour intensive. There are design tools available for basic planning. Bathroom brochures and magazines are a great way of getting some ideas and inspiration. Once you have decided on your bathroom design the purchase of the bathroom suite is the easy part of the job. The important things to consider are the quality, length of warranty, availability and of course the cost. Traditional Bathrooms Limited and Abstract Bathrooms offer free bathroom brochure packs and expert impartial advice. If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us on 01405 818500.

Bathroom Advice From The BBC

Next to kitchens, bathrooms tend to be the most expensive rooms in a house to renovate, as they require specialised trade services such as plumbing, tiling, and electrical work. Even when buying a house or apartment that has already had a lick of paint and a few ‘renovations’ applied to bedrooms, hallways and living rooms, the kitchen and bathroom have probably been left untouched, or may not suit your discerning sense of taste and style.

This is a guide to doing a bathroom ‘on the cheap’ without it looking cheap.

Step One: Avoiding Major Costs

Take a good look at your bathroom. You may not like where the bath is, or wish the shower was just ‘a couple of inches to the left’. Take a deep breath and toss away any grand plans to move any of these fixtures (toilet, bidet, basin, bath and shower), as the biggest budget-buster in a bathroom renovation is plumbing work.

Unless your layout is absolutely and completely unlivable (which is a matter of opinion), ditch any ideas of moving anything that’s connected to water or waste pipes.

The second way to keep those costs down is adhering to the ‘KISS’ principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!).

For example, options for daggy or dark tiles include buying tiles and hiring a tiler (expensive) or choosing a product to paint over the tiles to give them a fresh look. If your budget is already straining under a mortgage, it is advisable to choose the latter.

A product called Tub ‘n’ Tile does this job nicely, consising of a two part epoxy resin that simply gets painted over tiles to produce a brilliant, porcelain finish. The only drawback is it currently only comes in two colours: white or vanilla. This limits decor choices, but also helps in sticking to the KISS principle.

Similarly, replacing unsightly floor tiles, which cannot be painted with the epoxy resin and require heavier tiles than walls, is another budget blow out. Consider taking the option of laying down bathroom carpet, which is rubber-backed and made from nylon. This works when the shower has a screen that prevents water splashing over the floor and making the carpet soggy. If this does not apply, perhaps making room in the budget for good quality floor tiles may be the only option.

Step Two: Preparation

There is simply no good substitute for preparation when it comes to renovations. Unfortunately, this is the most tedious and thankless part of the process.

Unless you are an exemplary house cleaner, the bathroom will have a build-up of grime from soaps, body fats and other dirt in those hard-to-reach places.

Before considering painting or applying a product such as Tub ‘n’ Tile, it is essential to get rid of this build-up from any surfaces which are going to be revamped.

Preparation includes sugar soaping the walls and ceilings to be painted, bleaching any mould spots that have accumulated and sanding all surfaces to be rejuvenated.

Another area of preparation is covering any taps, pipes and cornices you don’t want paint splashed over with easy-to-remove masking tape. Also removing any items to be replaced, such as cabinets, tapware, etc.

Also, wash down all surfaces to ensure they are free from dust before painting.

Step Three: Painting Surfaces

Measure wall surfaces in square metres/feet and consult your local paint distributor for the required amount of paint2. You will also need to measure the surface area of tiles to be covered, to determine how many packets of Tub ‘n’ Tile are needed – local variants may differ in instructions and quantities.

Start by painting the ceiling, then come down to the wall surfaces. Give both two coats of paint and allow to dry. This may take longer if the weather is humid or raining, as more time between coats may be necessary.

Applying the Tub ‘n’ Tile product will take much longer because each tile needs to be painted individually to achieve the best effect. But the result is worth it; the tiles (and bathtub/basin) will have a gleaming, pristine porcelain finish.

Step Four: Decorations

A stark white bathroom suite is all very well for minimalists, but some need a bit of colour in their life. Instead of replacing a row of tiles with feature border, consider purchasing tile transfers that you can simply place over tiles to act as decorative features.

Another idea to add colour to a bathroom is stenciling a border around the walls.

After applying the tile transfers, and while waiting for those to dry, cut the carpet to size leaving holes for pipes.

Laying bathroom carpet is simply a matter of laying it straight over the floor tiles. If you want it to be semi-permanent, double-sided tape takes care of this.

Step Five: Installing Accessories, Tapware and Extractor Fans

After waiting the required time for all surfaces to dry and seal, now comes the fun part: dressing up your bathroom suites. This includes installing any new cabinets, towel rails, soap holders and tapware you may have bought.

It may be possible to buy all the accessories from the same hardware supermarket as the paint and Tub ‘n’ Tile products. More and more of these are springing up everywhere, with competitive prices that reflect the growing trend in DIY.

Finally, if you do not already have an extractor fan (the absence of which would have contributed to any mould on ceilings and walls) it would be wise to purchase and install one now. Unless your country has restrictions on wiring up appliances like these, you may need to hire an electrician. Or perhaps you are lucky enough to have one in the family…

Qualceram In Buyout Bid

Posted in Bathroom Furniture, Bathrooms, Free Standing Baths, Google Bathrooms, Royce Morgan Free Standing Roll Top Baths, bathroom with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 2, 2008 by bathroomsuites

By John Mulligan

Friday March 21 2008

Arklow-based bathrooms and bathrooms suites firm Qualceram Shires could be valued at as much as €25m if a preliminary approach made towards the company leads to an offer.

Releasing disappointing preliminary results for 2007 yesterday, Qualceram said it had received the approach from a third-party and stressed that no offer might ultimately be made.

Three directors at the firm, including chief executive John O’Loughlin, who own almost 40pc of the company between them, are not involved in the approach, which is understood to have been made by an industry player from outside the country. One name touted yesterday was American Standard, a supplier of kitchen and bathroom accessories.

However, sources were at a loss to pinpoint a potential interested party, pointing out that Qualceram has evolved into much more of a distributor than manufacturer, and as such it was difficult to ascertain where the appeal in the company might be. The firm has already disposed of its Arklow site for over €30m.

Qualceram said yesterday 2007 revenues fell 12pc to €90m, while operating profit for the year slumped €3m to €1.1m. It said annualised cost savings introduced since the start of 2008, and accrued for in 2007, amount to €3m.

Mr O’Loughlin said that management is confident Qualceram can weather the downturn and emerge as a “stronger group, positioned for growth”.

Qualceram has been hammered by the slump in residential construction in Ireland, where it generates about 45pc of its sales. Most of the remainder comes from the UK.

One analyst said while the downturn in Qualceram’s sales in the Republic were to be expected, the extent of the poor second-half performance in the UK was less anticipated.

Mr O’Loughlin, sales and marketing director John Byrne, and production and technical director Thomas Byrne, each own almost 14pc of Qualceram.

They could be in line for a payment of up to €3.5m each if an offer was secured at €1.13 per share, although such a figure could be impacted by a writedown of intangible assets.

The stock closed the day yesterday at €1, up just over 2pc.

Styles Of Bathroom Sanitaryware Toilets And Basins

Posted in Bathroom Furniture, Bathrooms, Bathrooms, Free Standing Baths, Google Bathrooms, Hudson Reed, Royce Morgan Free Standing Roll Top Baths, bathroom, bathroom suites with tags , , , , , on December 27, 2009 by bathroomsuites

Traditional and Contemporary bathrooms are available in many different styles and the prices can vary from as little as £65.00 for a close coupled toilet with a basin and pedestal to in excess of £1000.00 for just a toilet. Why the big price difference?

It’s difficult to justify the difference in price just by looking at the ceramics themselves. What you’re paying for when you purchase the more expensive bathroom suites is usually the design aesthetics and brand recognition.  Generally speaking the more expensive suites will be the more chance you have of receiving good quality aftercare.  If you’re going to experience a problem with a toilet then it’s usually with either the toilet seat or the cistern fittings.

Traditional Bathrooms:

A typical Victorian period bathroom would feature a high level toilet, 2 tap hole basin and pedestal or basin stand and a Roll Top Bath.

Shower Tray Installation A Tale Of Woe

Posted in Bathroom Furniture, Bathrooms, Bathrooms, Free Standing Baths, Google Bathrooms, Hudson Reed, Royce Morgan Free Standing Roll Top Baths, bathroom, bathroom suites with tags , on November 29, 2009 by bathroomsuites

Shower trays installation was promised to be a simple matter by our plumber – a sage old man who wanders around the house muttering ‘Bello’, ‘Grande’ and ‘Buono’ seemingly at random and to himself. The reality of our experience fitting a new shower tray was a bit different and went as follows.

I am disabled and require a bigger space and stronger platform than most therefore we were already focussing on a quality product and not the usual bog-standard (if you’ll excuse the pun) bathroom fitting. In consultation with our local builder’s merchants we chose a Kaldewei enamel steel shower tray or shower tub carrier as it is sometimes called. The size I chose was large but not the biggest; 1.2m x 1.2m and it was made of thick white enamel steel. As a result we were quoted over €400 and a delivery period of 4 weeks.

About 2 months later, the shower tray finally arrived and we took delivery of it. We had left a suitable space in the floor of our bathroom but had not been able to plumb it in as we weren’t certain of the location of the drainage holes in the floor of the shower tray.

We opened the huge cardboard box and removed the steel tray. We were surprised to see that it had wires attached to it but later reading of the rather confusing instructions suggested that we need to ask our electrician to earth this surface. So, now we had 2 builders men waiting to finish the bathroom, a plumber waiting to fix the shower tray and an electrician earthing it.

On top of that, the shower tray came mounted on a huge chunk of polystyrene which we assumed was packing (and rather wasteful at that). It turned out that this was to be embedded in the floor of the bathroom around the pipe work and the shower tray mounted on top of that. The instructions from Kaldewei leave a lot to be desire – multilingual they may be but they are completely confusing in any of the ones we understand. I’ve got them in front of me and, even though we now know how it all works, the instructions don’t seem a whole deal clearer!

After many man-hours of swearing, arguing and, finally, sweating, we got the shower tray fixed into place and tiles laid around it to protect it and to keep water from going underneath it. If it works as well as it looks, it will have been worth it.

Bathroom Furniture and Bathroom Suites

It is a known fact that you spend a lot of time in your bathroom, so wouldn’t it feel so much better if it looked great? Bathrooms can cost a lot of money to design and install, but the rewards are usually well worth the investment. The bathroom is a place in which we do not only do our everyday washing and laundry, but also a place in which we need to relax and get rid of the stress we gathered throughout the day. Therefore adding bathroom vanity furniture might be a good way of improving your environment and at the same time reducing stress. When it comes to that, you can choose to add new dressing table or a new cabinet, or you can go for simpler additions such as small pieces of stylish furniture, depending on your budget.
Many people redecorate their home once every couple of years, and not just for functionality but also for improving the style and aesthetic appearance of the bathroom. Bathroom furniture is beginning to be more and more attractive to many persons. Bathroom furniture needs to be more than functional; bathroom furniture also has to satisfy even the most discerning taste. An increasing number of people value bathroom furniture quality marked by exceptional craftsmanship, design, and bold and enduring styles.
One thing you have to bear in mind though when trying to improve or change your bathroom vanity furniture is the fact that you should choose it wisely. This means that you have to set a tone of your bathroom design and add the right, well-chosen quality vanity piece. The good thing about bathroom vanity furniture is the fact that it comes in different styles and finishes, such as hand painted to distressed furniture and ornately carved or minimalist straight lines.
Another option you have with bathroom vanity furniture is using some pieces of bedroom vanities if they fit the space. Of course, you have to be careful with those, as they might not be water resistant, but they’ll surely make a good impression in case you want the bathroom to be in the same tone as the whole house. In this case, you can choose bathroom vanity furniture consisting of tables with matching stools and chairs, mirrors and makeup trays.
In case you need some free space to place the things you use in the bathroom as well as in the house, the piece of bathroom vanity furniture you might need is a table or a countertop cabinet. These are usually made of hardwood such as oak and can have beautifully upholstered benches.
Either way, you have to think carefully about how you’re going to use the respective pieces of bathroom vanity furniture. Even though the space in your bathroom might be tight, you can use it at its maximum potential and enjoy it.
The bathroom vanity furniture comes in a large variety of styles and therefore it is very easy to adapt to any style your bathroom might have. With a little luck and inspiration, you might be able to find the perfect match for your needs. You can add lightening, special types of windows and other accessories that will create a new look of your bathroom.
But, before that, you have to know a few things about buying bathroom vanity furniture. You have to make sure you take accurate measurements and take into account the layout and positions of your bathroom fixtures. In case you plan on changing some old bathroom vanity furniture with a new one, you might also consider the place where you plumbing are positioned as well as the bathtub, shower stall or toilet.
The key to any successful redecoration is planning and you should even start without having a good plan. Make sure that you have all the measurements done correctly and that you know what you are looking for. If you do, you can start browsing through furniture stores and online furniture shops. If you take your time and if you know where to look for bathroom furniture, you won’t be disappointed and your bathroom will never look the same again. In case you are the fortunate owner of a large sized bathroom, you could choose to keep your existing facilities and add a piece of bathroom vanity furniture as described above, in which case you have to figure out the best way to fit the objects as to keep the environment proportionate. And given the large variety of options you have when it comes to choosing bathroom vanity furniture, this should not be that hard. You’ll easily improve your bathroom’s image and create a space in which you can relax.

Bathrooms and Bathroom Suites from Traditional Bathrooms Limited

A less expensive option would be the Balmoral Slipper Bath from the Paris Collection by Abstract Bathrooms. This bath is made from twin skinned 5mm acrylic and is reinforced at the base. Don’t confuse this bath with similar looking baths as this bath has a superior specification.

Roll Top Bateau Baths And Boat Baths

Do I Need A Shower Pump?

Posted in Bathroom Furniture, Bathrooms, Bathrooms, Free Standing Baths, Google Bathrooms, Hudson Reed, Royce Morgan Free Standing Roll Top Baths, bathroom, bathroom suites with tags , , , , , on November 18, 2009 by bathroomsuites

Do I need a shower pump?

Historically , British water systems are generally connected to a cold water storage tank which is kept in the loft. These are known as gravity fed systems which are low pressure, and rely on the height of the tank to provide water flow pressure for the house. Due to height restrictions imposed on where the water tank can go, low pressure is a resulting factor ( can be as low as 0.1 bar). For those who prefer Power Shower performance , it is necessary to pump a gravity fed system , or install a high pressure boiler or an unvented system. NOTE: Only low pressure gravity fed systems can be pumped, check with your installer that the cold water storage tank and hot water cylinder are big enough (the hot water may run out). The standard UK tank is 225 Litres, ( this should be sufficient ) but for larger homes a 450 litre tank is recommended. A 120 litre cylinder for hot water should be sufficient , but larger homes may require a 166 litre cylinder. Pumps must fit in accordance with current water regulations, and not be connected to water mains either directly or indirectly via a mains fed water heater.

Where will the shower pump be fitted ?

The pumps work by pushing water rather than pulling it, and are situated as close to the water supply as possible. Therefore they are commonly fitted close to the hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard.

Pump specification

These pumps are all ” Twin Impeller Pumps” which are designd to boost performance of two water supplies (hot and cold) to a fitting with seperate flow controls. Whole house applications, one or two complete bathroom suites or a single mixer valve can have their performance boosted depending on the rating of the pump chosen. NOTE: Avoid pumping water to traditional WC systems, as this can reduce the lifespan of the pump. The disadvantages of pump systems are that there is an element of noise during operation, and also servicing issues need to be considered. However for many homes that require power showering from a gravity fed system , they are the only solution without having to replace the full haot water system.

How do I choose the correct shower pump ?

To achieve the desired performance it’s important that you choose the corrcet shower pump. Below is a table that can be used to identify which pump would be required to satisfy your installation.
